Invented by James Pillans in 1801, he gave the name blackboard to what we are calling chalkboard today.  It is made from slate, a kind of stone while the chalk we use to write on it is made from calcium sulphate.  Blackboards are used in many schools in the early years of the twentieth century.  It evolves and came in different colors like brown, black and green.  Most of the blackboards in the fifties were colored green since researches have revealed that this color that gives calming effect on the eyes.  This color also avoids the eyes from getting fatigued.

The first reason why blackboards are green is because one research revealed that human eyes are so sensitive to anything colored green.  Studies also showed that the retina of the eyes has two kinds of cells for light which are rods and cones.  About one hundred twenty million of rods are found in our eyes.  These rods are the ones helping us develop scotopic visions.  This helps us in seeing in bright and dark room.  Cones are the eye’s part that lets us recognize colors.  About seven million cones are found in our eyes and some of them are green in color.  They are very sensitive to light and let us get the best resolution when reading.

The second reason has to do with the cultures around the world.  The color green symbolizes hope, the color that most teachers associate with growth.  Therefore, in education it means that studying should have big part of the child’s growth process.

The third reason has to do with the rise of many groups world wide advocating environment protection.  Campaigns for going green have been popular even in the use of the color green in anything.
